Citizenship: In order to meet Federal and State requirements to possess a firearm, you must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National or Legal Permanent Resident.

License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3).

Age Requirement: All candidates for employment as a Police Officer I shall be at least 20 years of age.

Step By Step Guide For Applicants

  • Submit your application through the Employment Opportunities on the Maui County Website. This is an online-only process for your convenience.

    For Job Postings Click Here

    •  Upon submission, applications are screened to ensure the applicant meets the basic qualifications, including a minimum of a high school diploma or GED, and possession of a valid driver’s license.

    •  Qualified applicants will be scheduled for a written exam.

  • Applicants must successfully complete and pass a written exam, which can be taken in person or via a proctor.

  • Candidates who pass the written exam are invited to undergo a physical agility test, conducted in person. The physical requirements are as follows:

    • Vertical jump: 14-inch vertical jump

    • Sit-ups: 25 sit-ups in a minute

    • 300-meter run: 75 seconds or less

    • Push-ups: 19 push-ups in a minute

    • Mile and a half run: 16 minutes and 55 seconds or less

  • A. Eligibility for Positions
    Lateral transfers will be restricted to the positions of Police Officer I and Police Officer II.

    B. Eligibility Requirements
    To be considered for a lateral transfer, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    1. Job Qualification: The applicant must meet the minimum qualifications outlined in the job description for the position being considered.

    2. Experience: The applicant must have a minimum of three (3) years of service as a sworn police officer with powers of arrest in the United States or its territories. Service as a reserve officer or other unpaid peace officer will not count toward this requirement.

    3. Accreditation or Certification:

      • The law enforcement agency must be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), or

      • The applicant must hold a valid Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

    4. Separation: Applicants who have separated from a law enforcement agency as a police officer for more than one year are not eligible.

    5. Disciplinary Record: The applicant must not have any pending disciplinary actions or ongoing investigations for misconduct or criminal activity at their previous agency.

    C. Probationary Period
    Employees who transfer laterally will serve a 12-month probationary period.

    D. Assignment
    Employees are required to serve a minimum of one year in an outside district.
